What you can do to take care of yourself

Mental wellbeing and coronary heart disease

If you're living with coronary heart disease (CHD) you're likely to experience a range of different emotions which may vary from day to day and over time.

Changes you have to make to your lifestyle, your future plans and managing your medicines will all affect your mental wellbeing.

The British Heart Foundation recommends that many of the things that you do to help recover from your heart problems can also help improve your wellbeing. This includes:

  • eating a healthy diet
  • being active every day; as advised by your medical team
  • practicing techniques to help you relax
  • getting enough rest
  • if you drink alcohol, following your medical team’s advice. Alcohol is a depressant
  • taking your medication as prescribed
  • going to your check ups where you can discuss all aspects of your recovery, including how you're feeling
