Taking care of yourself if you're living with dementia

Looking after your health

It’s important to look after your physical and mental health when you have dementia:

  • eat a healthy and balanced diet and take enough fluids during the day
  • exercise regularly
  • ask your GP if you would benefit from flu vaccination and pneumonia vaccination
  • get enough sleep
  • have regular dental, eyesight and hearing check ups

If you have another long term health condition such as diabetes or heart disease, try to attend regular check ups with your GP. This should include a review of the medicines you are taking. Everyone diagnosed with dementia will also be offered an annual dementia review from their GP.

If you feel unwell see your GP. Things like chest or urine infections can make you feel very confused if not treated promptly.
