Caring for somebody who has long COVID

Caring for or supporting somebody who has long COVID can be challenging.

Based on their own experience, members of Stockport’s long COVID Peer Support group have some ideas and tips that can help. You could:

  • listen to the person with long COVID and do not think you have all the answers for them
  • be patient and recognise that they will have good days and bad days. This can be frustrating if you have made plans to do something which you then have to cancel or change because they are feeling rough that day
  • be patient with their rollercoaster of emotions, they may feel happy one day and then the next are in tears
  • try not to over manage them by making decisions about what you think they can and can not do
  • communication is important. There could be tears and arguments along the way. Keep talking so that you understand how you're both feeling physically and mentally. Try to walk in each other’s shoes
  • understand what is happening by reading up on the condition. The information on this website is a useful starting point
  • learn about pacing and how you might be able to help them with this
  • find something new to do that you can both manage and enjoy
  • recognise that it may also be mentally hard for you as you try to come to terms with how life has changed for you too. Feelings of frustration, anger and worry are very common
  • take time out to go off on your own or with friends and do something you enjoy, it will really help to boost your mood
