What you can do to take care of yourself

Using your inhaler

You may use an inhaler, also known as a pump or puffer, to manage your asthma.

If you do use an inhaler, you should make sure that you:

  • take your inhaler(s) as often as your doctor has told you to
  • are using the right inhaler technique so that the right amount of medicine will go straight to your lungs where it's needed. This will also mean you're less likely to have side effects

You may also find it easier to use a spacer. This is a tube that attaches to your inhaler and helps you get the best from your medicine.

When you have an asthma review, you should always get your inhaler technique checked by your nurse or doctor. You can also ask your pharmacist.

Visit the Asthma UK website for information about inhalers and spacers. There are also videos which will show you how to use your inhaler properly.
