What you can do to take care of yourself

Your asthma action plan

Your personal asthma action plan lists everything you need to know about looking after your asthma so that you can stay well. Using a plan can help you reduce the risk of having an asthma attack and potentially ending up in hospital.

Your doctor or asthma nurse will generally provide the plan and you'll fill it in together. If you do not have an asthma plan in place yet ask your doctor or asthma nurse at your next review.

You can also download an action plan from the Asthma UK website to take with you.

Your asthma action plan tells you:

  • which medicines you need to take each day and when
  • how to spot if your asthma is getting worse and what you should do
  • about asthma attacks, what to do if you have one and when you should seek professional help

Asthma UK recommend that you:

  • take a photo of your plan and keep it on your phone
  • send a photo of your plan to your friends, family and colleagues so they know what to do if you have an asthma attack
  • put copies of your plan in places that you see every day. For example; on the fridge door
  • check your plan once a month
  • take your plan with you whenever you see your doctor or asthma nurse
