Stay steady

You and your home

A fear of falling can affect your independence and confidence.

Many people have seen how making small changes in their lifestyle has increased their confidence and helped them stay in control of their life.

What you can do:

  • follow the advice on these webpages and start to make small changes so you can lower your risk of falling
  • do not let fear of falling slow you down. If you do feel you need further advice and support, think about talking to your GP, health professional or the adult social care team. You may need a referral to the Steady in Stockport Falls Prevention and Bone Health Service. They'll be able to help you live better at home for longer
  • if you're unsteady on your feet or repeatedly trip or fall, see your GP

Your home

6 out of 10 falls occur at home or in the garden. There are simple things that you can do to make your home safer and easier to move around in.

What you can do

Take a look around your home to see what trip hazards there are and how you could make it safer:

  • make sure you have good lighting and that there's a light in easy reach if you need to get up in the night
  • make sure that your pets have a collar and bell so you can hear them and avoid tripping over them
  • check for trip or slip hazards. For example; loose rugs, clutter on the floor or stairs
  • check stairs and steps have handrails on both sides
  • make sure you're safe if you have to climb up to reach for things. For example; high cupboards, to change light bulbs
  • check for uneven or slippery paths and steps outside. Are they free of moss and fallen leaves? Do you have a handrail to hold on to?

Consider getting an alarm and response service.
