Check if you're at risk of prediabetes

Self-assessment test

Check your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by doing this simple online validated self-assessment test.

To complete the test you'll need to know your height, weight and waist size.
You must be over 18 to complete the test and the results will not be accurate if you are pregnant.

If the results show you're at moderate or high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, you're advised to contact your practice nurse or GP as soon as possible. You may need a blood test to check for type 2 diabetes.

If the results show you're at increased or low risk of developing type 2 diabetes, making some small changes to your lifestyle now and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can have a big effect on your future health.

NHS Health check

If you're aged 40 to 74 you'll be invited by your GP to attend a free NHS Health Check every 5 years. This can tell you if you’re at higher risk of getting diabetes. Your GP will write to you inviting you to an appointment. You can find more information on health checks on our webpage

Risk factors

Your chance of developing type 2 diabetes increases if:

  • you’re over 40 and white, or over 25 and African-Caribbean, Black-African, Chinese or South Asian
  • you have a family history of diabetes
  • you're overweight, especially if you’re large around the middle
  • you have high blood pressure
  • you have a history of a heart attack or stroke
  • you have a history of schizophrenia, bipolar illness or depression, or if you're receiving treatment with anti-psychotic medication
  • you've had polycystic ovaries, gestational diabetes, or a baby weighing over 10 pounds

If a member of your family has type 2 diabetes please encourage other family members to have their risk assessed.
